Mechanichaotics is a highly sophisticated, industrial branch of civilian magic that seamlessly blends complex bronze engineering with active Chaos energy. By housing wild currents within intricate mechanical structures, this discipline gives rise to self-sustaining automated systems, advanced mass transit, and responsive architecture that forms the infrastructure of the civilian world.
Mechanichaotic design is characterized by a dense, exposed, and restless anatomy of bronze gears, horizontal shafts, rotating levers, and rhythmic pulleys. Active components constantly thrum with a sharp, static metallic scent—frequently described as the ozone smell immediately preceding a lightning strike. The most common manifestation of this craft encountered by the public is the Automaton (locally dubbed a "Tom"). The most prominent example is Odwinibald (affectionately nicknamed "Odie"), a unique campus maintenance Tom rumored to be a historical experiment gone wrong. Unlike his silent, death-staring siblings, Odwinibald possesses an fully functioning, vocal verbal capacity, an awkwardly hesitant, delicate human touch, and an intensely self-reflective, nervous personality that causes his internal gear arrays to chatter sporadically whenever his thoughts wander.
