An ancient stay of execution — a gilded leash that binds ward and Grand Master alike for a year and a day.
The Bastia Aegis is an ancient, high-stakes legal custom within the governance of the Bastionic Lodge that allows a sectarian leader to unilaterally stay a Council decree of expulsion. Reserved for extreme circumstances, invoking the Aegis saves an unworthy or wayward soul from being stripped of their name and rank, placing them instead under a strict probationary contract that legally binds their future conduct directly to their commanding Grand Master.
The Aegis is a formalized legal status recorded within the weathered, time-warped historical volumes maintained by the Lodge's Icori servants. In practice, its invocation operates as an absolute bureaucratic shield — often described by lookers-on as a "gilded leash" — that halts immediate execution or banishment in the Council Chambers, freezing all hostile proceedings the moment it is declared.
The absolute authority of the Lodge Council allows them to strike the name of any member or aspirant judged unworthy. However, the Grand Master of the accused's respective sect retains the sole right to override this judgment, by virtue of their intimate knowledge of the member's true character.
Declaring the Aegis stays the hand of the Council, completely nullifying the expulsion for a strict probationary window lasting exactly a year and a day.
During the probationary interval, the invoking Grand Master stands as absolute legal surety for their ward, making them fully answerable for all subsequent transgressions. Any further penalty, demotion, or subsequent expulsion earned by the ward is visited equally upon the Grand Master.
To validate the stay, the invoking sect must submit a formal penance through which the probationary member must actively manifest their contrition and perform restitution.
This emergency legal grace is strictly singular — the Bastia Aegis can never be invoked for the same soul a second time in their history.
The Bastia Aegis is an exceptionally rare mechanism within the history of Temple Bastion, traditionally invoked only a handful of times across the centuries, almost exclusively for direct blood kin. In the modern era, its deployment highlights growing ideological polarization between the Lodge's traditional leadership and its front-line combatants.
When Grand Master Valkyrie invoked the Aegis to rescue Aspirant Beatrice Grey following her unmasked outburst at Emergent Park, it provoked explosive outrage from Grand Master Silas Thorne and deep misgivings from Elder Pain. Under the terms of this specific invocation, Beatrice was stripped of her right to use a Draw and sentenced to manual servitude at Agriant Academy — transforming a high-profile military trial into an experimental diplomatic deployment supervised by Adept Orath.
