A Codex is an ancestral, traditional medium used for Channeling energy, taking the form of a bound journal or book rather than a carved stone trinket. Largely phased out by modern urban society, the Codex is considered a relic of an older era, utilized almost exclusively by historical purists or rogue entities operating outside regulated city channels.
A Codex manifests as a bound notebook or diary. Unlike the clean, manufactured lines of modern stone amulets, an active Codex often appears old, weathered, and heavily battered. Its interior pages are typically warped with age, and the object natively resonates with a dense, roving pocket of the Fog that remains anchored to the volume even when observed directly.
Channeling through a Codex relies on written text, formulas, or journals to circuit clean energy loops. The older generation, including Valerie O'Neil, explicitly refers to them as "little books" that performed the exact same containment functions as modern Talismans.
Because a Codex natively carries its own dense, shifting cloud of localized resonance, it serves as a far more volatile and organic conduit than corporate stone tools.
In modern Capitol City, the Codex has been systematically replaced by Talismanic technology. To the progressive administration of Agriant Academy, clinging to a Codex is viewed as a voluntary holdout practice favored by stubborn, older generations who refuse to adapt to modern safety protocols. Rogue elements — such as Jackie Newlove, who carries his weathered Codex in a specialized leather harness concealed beneath his smoky coat — use them to bypass city tracking networks, keeping their private abilities completely unmonitored.
